Reviews.
This series is FOR 18+(according to imdb) IK that the nature of the mc is quite controversial and normally I would have quit a show right away if it promoted pedo stuff and all. But let's talk about this cour 2 first. When we talk about animations it doesn't get any better than this, one of the best world-building experiences ever, and the world itself is so great, damn I can't get enough about it. A lot of work has gone into the animation and storytelling (sort of), which you can clearly see. For the plotline, it has deviated a bit from the MC which is a good thing in itself. More time is given to characters like Ruijerd, Eris, and his dad. it balances it out perfectly. So let's address the elephant in the room, that's the mc and his pedo tendencies. I think that's it really F**ed up. Many people don't know but in season one when the mc was thrown out of the house while watching p*rn , he was actually watching his nieces on-screen( according to LN readers) (This show is clearly written by a person who has some very weird fetishes, which are clearly visible throughout the series especially in episodes 9, and bundled in with some unwanted s*x scenes but only with moans) IDK what the manga shows but the anime has done a lot to reduce these scenes, but yes they do exist, and I'm still bitter about it and how it spoilt such a great show which obviously will get a lot of love and a huge amount of traction but again the negatives will creep in. Now about the season, its been great so far(8+) the storytelling has been great, they have not rushed the episodes like in many isekai which hope to build hype for the new manga or LN, but not so in this case which shows that they r in it for the long haul and I'm expecting many more episodes to come. The fight scenes have been great, the emotional episodes have also been great. Now I would have given it 9.5 out of 10 but it pains to see such a great show being spoilt by pedo tendencies so im reducing it to 8. (Excited for the school arc) Ciao no hate EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION, JUST DONT FORCE IT ON OTHERS.
The first cour of Mushoku Tensei was heavily focused on the coming of age aspect. There weren’t any big bads to fight or need for magical aids to stop them. It was enough to make most overlook the pervy side of the protagonist and to consider it the best isekai of all times. The second cour, however, no longer has that element and comes off more like an adventure, so the need for conveniences and magic nonsense increased tenfold for the sake of the main characters not dying every ten steps they make. The plot keeps favoring the protagonist for no other reason than him being the protagonist. Major examples include: Mangod constantly telling Rudy what to do instead of letting him choose himself or work things through on his own. Rudy comes off as not having free will because of it. Besides that, demon lolis give him cheap magical power ups without having to train. Bad guys set fire in a forest exactly when Rudy is about to set it on fire, so he won’t actually have to do an evil act. Aristocrats are conveniently revealed to be otakus who help Rudy out without him having to first earn their trust. People appear in front of Rudy exactly when he was talking about them, just so the plot can continue immediately after an infodump. Gods return Rudy to life after they kill him without him doing something for earning his resurrection. It all feels cheap, lazy, and contrived. You never feel there is tension because of the convenient way everything plays out. Not even when the protagonist’s party gets defeated and he is seemingly killed. Why would you think he will stay dead when he had just infodumped a lot of stuff that haven’t happened yet? Along with all that, the pervy antiques of the protagonist did not go away and in many ways became far worse. He clearly does not want to stop being a pedo and there is no redemption story in sight. There won’t be one either, as confirmed by the author himself. Heck, his own family tells him he hasn’t changed one bit at one point. He is never punished for his behavior and is given no reason to change. And no, light scolding and comical slaps don’t count as punishment. Neither does his imprisonment at the beastmen village, since he was wrongfully accused. The isekai world he ended up in is sexually objectifying and taking advantage of women at every chance it gets without repercussions for the men. I mean, how can I overlook the fact that a maid got raped by a cheating husband and the outcome had the husband scoring a second wife? Or omitted details, such as the nymphomaniac she-elf who was cursed by men to be like that? Or that the almost naked chick that follows the pedo protagonist’s father is slutting herself so men will continue to treat her like a slut after she got raped by them? And before some smartass points out how it is exactly what was going on in the dark ages, I will remind him that this show is full of powerful female adventurers therefore it gives them privileges whenever it suits its videogame aesthetics. The show even has the nerve to treat such touchy subjects like a joke and thus ruins its theme exploration. For an anime that many like for its world building or attention to detail when it comes to slice of life, it breaks immersion whenever it reminds you it’s a silly anime that expects you to treat sexual exploitation as comedy. Also, let’s not pretend that the camera does not zoom on the crotch of underage girls or doesn’t use hentai camera shots for the sake of pleasing the degenerates. Mushoku also fails to have compelling villains, since they are all sadistic pedo rapists. In practice they are even sleazier versions of the protagonist, and made to come off as one-dimensionally evil so Rudy will seem better by comparison. They have no redeeming qualities and you just expect him to kick their asses so he will come off as a hero. Without any grey zone, the cast becomes flat and artificial.I kept the worst for last (and it also happens at the very end). The last episode is the worst in the whole series thus far, by using really dumb excuses for why the UNDERAGE redhead girl wanted to have sex with her 12 YEAR OLD COUSIN. And of course the pedo protagonist did not show his maturity by refusing her moves either. There was absolutely no need for that sex scene to happen other than pleasing the sickos watching this crap. And then, as if throwing insult to injury, the redhead abandons him for the sole purpose of Rudy not having a steady relationship for the rest of the story and thus leaving him free to sleep around with more children. Completely deplorable. So yeah, whatever good impressions the first cour had left me with (not many) were completely trashed here. I know most in the community love this horrible show, because they see it as escapism fantasy. Who wouldn’t want to molest children without getting punished and getting convenient power ups and magical resurrections with zero repercussions? I don’t watch anime for that, therefore Mushoku Tensei is officially another cancer of modern anime.
This show just continues to impress. After a really strong first season, the second season maintains that really high level of consistency. The thing I love the most about this show is its world building, with character development coming in as a close second. It's a joy to see what kind of approach our heroes might take in dealing with their conflicts, since every conflict is handled in its own unique way. The characters can be extremely goofy, but can be serious when they need to be. Everything in this show has a personality. We get to see our heroes travel through several continents, all with their own laws and unique look on life. These continents are massive and travelling through them takes time, which results in our heroes learning more about the places that they visit and changing the way they're interacting with people due to the knowledge that they've gained. However, our adventurers never seem unbeatable or really on top of things, they have their strengths but also still have a lot of weaknesses. Their reputation grows slowly, but it's still not really respected. Rudeus, due to his previous life, will still look at the world in a rather unusual way, which does result in him reacting differently than most of the people born into this world would. Even though our characters are growing, so do their doubts and insecurities. As wonderful as the show is, a lot of viewers will be put off by the way that Rudeus acts around his second cousin, since his 40-year-old soul has been granted a new body. In return, that same 15-year-old second cousin can't stop herself from wanting to have sex with, in her eyes, a 2-year younger Rudeus. Then we also have the girl that looks like a young teenager, is at least 40 years old, craving a relationship with that same 13-year-old boy with the 40-year-old soul. And we shouldn't forget Sylphiette, who looks and acts 13, but who will age slower than Rudeus and Eris. That being said though, kids get beaten, killed and sold in this show and most people seem to be fine with that. If we keep digging, I'm sure we'll find plenty more disturbing things that happen in this world. It's the 14th century all over again. Marrying daughters off to gain a slight favour with another duke is something you should expect in a show like this. It doesn't follow the laws and rules we live by, but we also shouldn't forget that this is a fictional fantasy show. But again, a high quality season and I can't wait to see what's next in store for this amazing show.

*RebelPanda sits down to write a review of Mushoku Tensei with the help of his friend Al for a second time*
Al: Mushoku Tensei’s second season exceeded all of my expectations built up by the first. It is a thrilling fantasy journey spanning a brilliantly designed world sprawling with intricately written characters—each of them overflows with nuanced personality and varied cultural backgrounds. Rudeus developed exponentially since the first season. His companion Eris underwent a heartfelt character arc. My favorite, Roxy, returned for a much-needed episode dedicated to her compelling backstory. The spectacular art, animation, and sound continue to make it the most impressive TV anime productions. . Combined with the first season, this is without a doubt the best anime I’ve seen all year, worthy of all its high ratings and praise.
Panda: Here we are again to review Mushoku Tensei: the most overrated anime of the year. Everything I said in my original review continues to be true. Rudeus is still a pervert, but now he is slightly older. Both mentally and physically. Is there character growth this season? Sure, but it’s one step forward, two steps backward. I did appreciate that episode dedicated to Roxy you mentioned. At the very least, I agree with your take on the audio and visuals, but none of that justifies ignoring the repugnant aspects contaminating the whole show.
Al: At least we can agree on the art and animation. Before we dig into it, I need to get this off my chest: Why the fuck are you still watching a show you hate? Do you just enjoy hating popular anime? You proved your point last time. Is this just for the clout?
Panda: I’m still watching it for a few reasons: There are more problems I didn’t get a chance to address with my first review. I want to amend some of my previous arguments. The new chapters have introduced a whole truckload of problems that someone has to criticize and that someone might as well be me. Is it for clout? The amount of harassment I get from reviewing Mushoku Tensei outweighs any personal gain, so no, this is not for the clout. It is purely for my satisfaction.
Al: A truckload of criticism, you say? I find that hard to believe, considering it is one of the highest-rated anime of all time on every popular database. If you watched more fantasy anime, you would understand why. It stands out from the crowd of adaptations because the characters are unique, a significant focus on world-building, and the story keeps you engaged. At the core of this season are Eris and Rudy’s journey to find their families after being separated by the mana calamity—a puzzle you slowly put together as they reveal one piece at a time. The Demon Continent is such an intriguing setting too. It is home to many different fantasy races and cultures.
Panda: Those are reasons why you, and many others, enjoy the show. I’d like to agree with you, but it’s not nearly as good as you make it out to be. We’re told the world is vast, but we only see a narrow sliver. All we get is essentially medieval Europe, then a bit of time on the beast-men village to justify keeping wolf girls around. Mushoku Tensei is popular because it’s a crowd-pleaser. It panders to fans of the isekai genre while attracting the attention of anime fans with eye-catching visuals, action, gore, and sex. The problematic parts are the only hurdle its target audience needs to leap over. However, some would prefer to defend all aspects of the show until their dying breath.
Al: If people care so much about anime being “problematic,” they should watch western cartoons instead. Can’t you save the virtue signaling for Twitter?
Panda: No, but we can save that discussion for later. Right now, we have to discuss this so-called masterpiece of a second season that relies on asspulls and plot conveniences. Rudeus isn’t the refreshing isekai protagonist you say he is; he’s overpowered like the rest. Jumping directly into the second season, he’s given an overpowered ability for no reason. A boisterous little girl dressed like a stripper pops up out of nowhere to flash her panties and grant him this power—The “Eye of Foresight” which allows him to see the future. Seeing the future and casting spells without incantations gives him a considerable edge in combat. It looks cool, but he did not work for either skill.
Al: Rudy trained with magic as a toddler! Of course, he is skilled. Kishirika gave him the eye because he fed her. Those shitty examples are not asspulls at all.
Panda: OK. Rudeus did do some work, but food for a magical eye scarcely seems adequate. As for the asspull… Whenever Rudeus’s God friend, the one who reincarnated him, assists him, that’s a deus ex machina. The asspull is when it tosses Rudeus a lifeline. All sense of danger is gone. Sure, the fights are excellently choreographed, easy to follow, and fluidly animated, but there are no stakes. Not only is God on his side, but he can see the future. Rudeus and Eris are fighters who can take care of themselves, but even when they’re against strong foes, they have Ruijerd at their back. In the anime, Ruijerd is perhaps the most underutilized character. Introduced late into the first cour, the intimidating warrior is the crew's mentor, guardian, and escort. By the end of the cour, he’s not given enough attention to be anything but a convenient and disposable tool for Rudeus.
Al: You say that, but in your last review, you were critical of Roxy’s insufficient character development, but now the anime has rectified that. It is too soon to judge Ruijerd because he will likely get more spotlight in the third season.
Panda: Roxy is not a central character, whereas Ruijerd is constantly around like furniture. The issue is unavoidable. Roxy’s character development was indeed a pleasant surprise. Cutting her point of view at various points throughout the season was a charming idea. Her backstory offered insight into her upbringing and explained why she acts calm and collected. They finally explained why she looked like a prepubescent child! And it was so hilariously stupid and a tacked-on excuse for lolicon fanservice.
Al: You’re seriously making this argument?
Panda: We’ve covered the topic of pedophilia in Mushoku Tensei plenty in our first discussion, so best not to dwell on it. You argue that Rudeus has developed exponentially, but that’s not the way I see it. “Eris is 13 now, and she’s been growing up nicely,” is one of the first lines of season two, episode one. Rudeus says this in his perverted adult inner voice as she strips to go swimming at the beach. He hasn’t come very far from the first season if this is how he starts. Comments like this and sexual assault happen throughout the season, though I’m sure you won’t see it like that.
Al: Pause. I’ve already given you my opinion on this. Rudy is a CHILD. It is normal for kids his age to feel attracted to girls his age. How could it be sexual assault if they’re both children?! Besides, the show is aware he is a little immature at times, and that’s why his poor actions are never condoned.
Panda: If the anime indeed condemns his perverse nature, why does it sexualize Eris? For example, after the beach scene, when she says she plans to go goblin hunting, we see an image of her getting assaulted in Rudeus’s head. Even though Rudeus’s perversion is a character flaw, the show indulges in the same perversion. His pedophilia is not seen as a flaw to overcome. Pedophilia is one of his personality traits. He only “gets better” when he stops making sexually objectifying comments out loud, groping people, and grinning perversely. That’s why the show encourages a lolicon audience and filters out people who find sexualized kids disturbing.
Al: Drawings of sexualized kids. If Twitter gets offended by drawings, they should stop comparing anime to child abuse. There are no kids at harm. It would help if you focused on canceling real pedophiles instead of artists.
Panda: OK. Drawings. You’re overlooking the point here. If the show’s theme earnestly were self-betterment, it would need to fix how he views children. He’s an adult in a child’s body. Since his rebirth, he had the dirty mind of a convicted sex offender. When he was born, he looked at his parents Paul and Zenith, and said they looked young because he retained all the mental capacity of a grown man. If he sees his adult parents as young, what does he think of Eris, a 14-year-old?
Al: Actually, she’s 15.
Panda: Because that changes so much!
Al: Their relationship is normal for kids their age. Rudy proves he has gotten better when Eris clumsily comforts him with a hug. He does not act perverted. Additionally, Rudy proves he has changed when confronted with his excited outlook on living a fantasy adventure. Once he’s told to consider the death and destruction—like his missing family at the end of the first season—he realizes the gravity of the situation. This confrontation attacks Rudy’s childish view of the world, forcing him to become more compassionate.
Panda: He does act perverted, constantly. He sexually assaults Eris in front of Ruijerd and there's no punishment! That's not normal behavior for kids their age, and don't forget he is still about 30-40 years old. No one punishes Rudeus because the show does not treat his behavior like a problem—this has the accidental effect of making Ruijerd seem like a spineless character who condones perversion. The confrontation you are describing was one of the only parts of the story I’ve appreciated up until now. You’re right, and it altered him. Temporarily. Soon thereafter, he did his worst act of pedophilia, undoing all of the progress he made—reader, I'll leave it up to your imagination.
Al: The truth is, once Rudy becomes a grown-up, you will have nothing left to slander. Your entire argument is reliant on the same hollow criticisms you constantly used in the first review. Rudy's personality flaws are not an unintentional problem like you seem to think.
Panda: Even if Rudeus were reincarnated without the memories of his previous life as a scumbag, it’d still suck. Remove his flaws, and he’s another overpowered Mary Sue isekai hero. Plot contrivances carry the story—like the Mana calamity that began the entire season! His motivations are weightless and barely relevant to the plot, and his goals don't drive the show. Even if you can overlook the asspulls, the tone is all over the place because random sexual situations happen at the worst times. There's a guarantee that once an episode there'll be a busty woman dressed like a stripper for no reason other than obnoxious pandering. I get why you love Mushoku Tensei. All I want is to engage with it responsibly. It is OK to like problematic things. When you attempt to defend its problematic aspects, you make the whole thing seem worse.
Al: I can tell you think you’re helping, but people won’t change anyone’s minds to suit how you view the world. In my eyes, everything I’m defending is perfectly reasonable. My rating for the second season is still a 10/10.
Panda: I don’t expect to change anyone’s mind. I only want to get my thoughts out for my own sake and for others who might disagree with the overwhelming praise for such an underwhelming show. No amount of spectacular animation, great sound design, and epic instrumental music can salvage such an awfully contrived story, stagnant character development, and repugnant themes.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH, can we NEVER, EVER, give more than enough credit to Studio Bind, to director Manabu Okamoto, to Yuiko Oohara, to each and everyone in the Mushoku Tensei staff team for handling Rifujin no Maganote's work in a tremendous-yet-staggering, phenomenal-yet-outstanding way? Sure as hell not, because more than Studio Bind already committed to only working on THE Pioneer of Isekai and more seasons to be done in the future, Mushoku Tensei is already, but truly THE platinum benchmark standard for incredible and masterpiece-worthy Isekai stories done massively right, even if the perverseness of the MC Rudeus Greyrat continues to wear thin on those ready . with their pitchforks to yet proclaim more SJW and cancel culture.
This review will only concern the events of the 2nd half of Mushoku Tensei, so it's best that you would've already watched the 1st half in order to get the context for the ENTIRE Season 1 combined. Spoilers be warned, though I'll try my best to keep it at the maximum of minimums in order to retain the vagueness to the excitement that lies ahead for the future potential of Mushoku Tensei as a whole.
The epic story continues with the newly-formed Dead End party of Ruijerd Superdia, Eris Boreas Greyrat and Rudeus Greyrat as they cross territories in search of the Greyrat family members who've been lost from the Teleportation Incident in the 1st half. More specifically to Rudeus, the Man-God Hitogami has given him a fair bit of tasks to do, though the intentions of it remains vague as to "show, not tell" the real reasons of why everything is done for a reason: - The ending of the "Entry-Level Adevnturer Arc" of the recruitment of Ruijerd at clearing their name because of the curse that the Demon God Laplace has placed on the Superds; - The "Voyage Arc" into Millishion, where the intersection happens between the Dead End party and Roxy's party with the newly acquainted dwarf magician Talhand and elf warrior Elinalise Dragonroad on the same mission, the introduction to the hilarious Demon Empress Kishirika Kishirisu, Ghislaine's Beast Race and best monke Geese Nukadia; - The "Reunion Arc" where both father and son (Paul and Rudeus) reunite together with the already grown up sister Norn, and Roxy's homecoming back to her Migurd tribe, both to drastic results; - The "Homecoming Arc" where the surrogate Lilia and Aisha lies in need of saving in Shirone Kingdom (that if you recall, that was hinted thorugh Roxy's letters to Rudeus while she was in the kingdom teaching the perverse young 4th Prince Pax in the 1st half), and yet another eventual Turning Point meeting one of the Seven Great Powers, the Dragon God Orsted and his companion Nanahoshi Shizuka. And for all the same reasons that the Man-God Hitogami is trying to make a rouse of his presence, there he requests Rudeus to perform it in his stead due to the multitude of reasons why he is a bother to some that knows him too initimately. There is a clear rivalry of those against the Man-God, but we'll only know the reasons behind this in future seasons to come.
The new adjustments this round, really has to go to the character development side of things. For the most part as we know that Rudeus STILL exhibits that pervertic "man of culture" taste, he has largely improved as he matures on the journey with Ruijerd and Eris. As I've said in my review of the 1st Cour, you can hate Rudeus all you want for his overly perverse behaviour, but the 2nd Cour is really where we get to see Rudeus's major transformation from being a Lenny-eyed deviant to a much more sensible, growing up child. The journey across both sea and land into different territories has Rudeus kept on his toes each and every time, and with that progress comes the fact that his powers have substantially increased with the help of a certain empress and a certain eye. But it's the interactions of reuniting with his family members that really dictate how we interpret Rudeus from the top-down, from a pure excruciating degenerate to a mature-centric boy in spite of all that's happened since the Teleportation Incident. Even if you STILL hate Rudeus and his past, there's just no reason to not empathize with his massive growth into sensibility with the 2nd half here.
This is even so more apparent on Eris's part, as like Rudeus, she transforms from a raging red-haired loud and obnoxious bitch into someone that's growing strong, meek, playful and courageous, as certified by Ruijerd himself for relentlessly training her for the 6 years that they've been together as a party. And man, what a transformation into a beauty that Eris became ever since the day that Rudeus was introduced to her back in the 1st half. No wonder that fans of Mushoku Tensei are quick to call Eris one of the best (if not the first) MC girls alongside Roxy and Slyphiette (though their roles will come much later in the story), because from cradle to life, Eris has also seen a large improvement on her behalf from being the one that is overbearing to one that really cares for both Rudeus and Ruijerd. The 6 years of wandering in this long journey has taught Eris fundamental and elemental lessons about interdependence and supporting each other, as such with the trips like Ghislaine's Beast Race that is an exposé of of how she sees Ghislaine as compared to her original tribe and coming to an understanding, a consensus. As much as I kinda hate Eris's behaviour at the very start, the 2nd half really couldn't give more than enough dips to see why Eris holds the distinction of being the earliest "Best Girl" position in the series yet, I'm very impressed at the personal growth of Eris, both physically and mentally. And yes, I'm not gonna sugarcoat this, but I need not mention the 3-letter word which feels straight up like the successor to Turning Point 1 in the 1st half.
Ruijerd though, really is something else. Being the only Superd left alive (and god knows how many of the Superd Race are still left alive), his conviction from Rudeus to help dispel the infamy of his race and put a good name to it is only driven by the fact that the Superd Race was once serving alongside the Demon God Laplace, only for that to fall into ruin and decimate the whole tribe. Now that the entire tribe is in a bad position given Laplace's influence, the conformity of Ruijerd in his once-iconic green hair is stripped away, and he assumes the new identity of cutting his hair to become a bald man, and if you know anything about symbolism, the cutting of hair means a changed person, and Ruijerd slowly overtime is both changed and changing the course of Rudeus and Eris's life spent with him in the travelling pilgrims of places. That in itself speaks to the one who is feared the most, the "Dead End", that some try their best to not put Ruijerd on a stand because of his race's detrimental history, to only end up leaving the same as per the norm. Otherwise, he's the definition of the spear warrior to beat, even though both (mostly) Eris and Rudeus train under him very vigorously to be stronger each day.
Overall really, what a show that while it's just mainly coursing the events of the Dead End party on their highs and lows, scouting danger at every turn, with it brings massive character development fleshed to the very bottom of the soul and heartpangs. Simply just could not be said that Mushoku Tensei continues to elevate itself weekly in multitude as the series get so much grandiose and better.
And what is siginificantly better for the most part is Studio Bind's efforts to adapt Mushoku Tensei to the best that the studio can under director Manabu Okamoto, and I needn't repeat myself to say that they've already made a name for themselves with the 1st half that started at the beginning of 2021. If the 1st half was just stupendously splendid, the 2nd half magnified that THOUSAND-fold to create a worthy successor of a stunning masterclass production that is always kept consistent and magnificent, especially on the action scenes which are always kept at stupidly high-octane, god-mode quality settings that are meant to just showcase the amount of unfathomable talent behind the show. Take the example of Episode 6 where there's a scene of Rudeus splitting bread, and as stupid as it seems to see a loaf of bread so superbly animated, it's just some of the many and best teasers of Mushoku Tensei yet that the animators can choose to flex the talents they have. Utterly speechless, I'm very floored.
What can I say about the OST, which has gotten only better thanks to Yuiko Oohara for composing yet once again another superb set of songs to add to the overall Mushoku Tensei OST. In case you miss the symbolism of it, each of her OP songs are composed in such a way that it reflects the regions that the Dead End party has traversed through, exact to their setting and atmopsheres. Her 2nd ED, while I still think that the 1st half's ED is still by far the best ED yet, the 2nd half is more ominous and less cheerful, that once again, is exact to the journey undertaken in this time period. You COULD NOT have asked for a better, much richer OST than the now iconic and legendary Takagi-san singer, and Yuiko Oohara only continues to impress as the series progresses to betterment.
By the time you've finished reading this review, you'd realize that I'm always saying the word 'better' a lot. But that's the exact case of the world of Mushoku Tensei, at least for the culmination of the entire Season 1 here, that we're only just at the beginning of the journey's end, and Rifujin no Maganote's story still has a lot more to go. Every season thereafter from here on out is gonna be amaze-balls (I know and feel it), always trumping the ones before it, and Studio Bind is leading that valiant chage with force. Bring it on, the future seasons that we'll gladly await upon its eventual arrival, because Mushoku Tensei is easily THE definitive anime, episode, series of the year, and I wholeheartedly stand by my decision that I will NEVER, EVER forget in years to come.
